Summary
What Bobby could never understand was how the lightning could keep him on the hook, and yet didn’t seem to do the same with the Buckleys.
Bobby’s hands had calluses from how firmly they had held and played with the rosary, his back had bent under the pain of an injury from years before for how many times he had gone to the hospital chapel to kneel for a prayer. He had almost forgotten how to put words together to form sentences that weren't questions about Buck’s condition and drawn-out information about his health. He had taken his first, real breath with Buck’s when they removed the tube, and yet…
And yet the kid’s parents had decided to leave anyway, only a week after his discharge.
“And thank you Captain, for taking care of our son.”
Our son, Phillip had said; as if the kid had ever been theirs.
Bobby can't seem to move on after Buck's coma. They have a late-night talk about nothing at all and the kid might, or might have not, called him "Pops" once more.

And there, Phillip's voice echoed in his head:“When you lose a child, you… you see him everywhere, in all the people he could have become, in all the lives he could have lived. It’s something you can never recover from, someone who can never be replaced!"
Because that was the point, wasn't it?
Buck didn't know how to be a son because he was never anyone's baby; just a reminder of what his parents had lost.
He knew that, but what scratched the walls of his brain was the annoying thought that crept under his skin and whispered the fateful question: did Bobby also see him as nothing more than what his kids could have been?

Bobby won't allow that.

Summary
May realised a very long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother. So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.
And, look, if in the process she also gains a brother-in-law… clearly the universe was just waiting for the opportunity to make that happen.

Or, the one where May ensures Buck is enfolded properly into the Grant-Nash clan, which means Bobby (and by extension the firefam, because gossip) suddenly gets significantly more insight into the inner workings of the Buckley-Diaz family, and all roads lead to Buddie…

“When I was little, maybe six or seven, I remember my mom saying that she ‘had to live with a reminder of her loss, staring her in the face every day.’ That’s all I ever was to them. Their grief was a cage, a gilded one, but still. And they locked me and Maddie in there with them. Maybe, doing this, asking them to sign away any claim they have to me? It-it sets them free, sets us all free.”
Bobby’s not thrilled about the metaphor, and even less thrilled about the anecdote.
Stories like that remind Bobby why simply telling the whole truth – that Bobby and Athena were pursuing an adult adoption of Buck – is out of the question. Margaret and Phillip are manipulative at best, abusive at worst; and their reaction to such an announcement would be wholly unpredictable. Keeping the adoption out of things is the best course of action, Bobby knows that. But God does he want to rub it in their faces that, for the rest of his life, he gets to be Buck’s dad and claim him as his son.
