Anders doesn't make a sound, doesn't blink. It's too much to bear, digs and claws past Sebastian's ribcage right to where his heart beats the rhythm of grief. They've been here before.

    In the pew, she traces the cover of her chant book and watches the Hightown crowd separate into its strata. The Harrimans group up with the De Launcets, while the Cavins cling to the Brekkers. No one comes to talk to the Hawkes, same as it ever was. A man brushes up against the pews as he walks down the aisle, and a few leaflets drop from his hand as he passes her, getting distracted with the microphone cord that snakes up the tiles.

    “You dropped this,” she says. She drops the pamphlet herself when the man turns around. Because standing in front of her, looking suddenly and grievously ill in his Chantry stole, is Sebastian Vael.

    Hawke comes home for the holidays and runs into a ghost from her own past.
