Essek would look so lovely in Caleb’s lap, held close and admired properly.

Caleb has to get out of this hug right now. Essek is trying to say "goodbye, be safe, I will see you soon." Essek’s body is not trying to tell him anything.

Essek is sharp and clever and beautiful. Essek can bend his fingers just so, and make bodies fold themselves in ways that reveal more anatomy than a science hall. He is a conductor of great violence, but right now his pulse is too rapid and his eyes are too wide, and he is looking at Caleb in a kind of shocked relief, and Caleb wants to make it better.
