Summary
Kendall’s taken at least three (but maybe five?) different substances, flying high where consequences can’t touch him: the Hindenburg pre-explosion. He briefly rests his hand on Roman’s head, ruffles his hair. Affection is hard to come by these days; Roman takes what he can get. Roman closes his eyes, hears one of Kendall’s friends ask Think this guy eats a deck shoe? If we deep-fry it?
Everything’s so fragile, fleeting. Kendall stands up, lurches away. Roman wants to remember this forever. He opens his eyes and takes another drink, the world spinning precariously around him. Thinks of something funny.
“You think he’ll get it—your name? On his head?”

Summary
“Mmm. My advice? Don’t send him to fuckin’ military school,” says Roman. For a second he glances downward. Something flashes in his eye, but when he looks back up it’s gone; Kendall probably just imagined it. “Name like Iverson? Kid’s gonna get eaten alive.”
“Rome, I…”
They’d played a lot of games as kids. Something with a dog cage. Kendall’s trained himself not to think about childhood. Lock the box, throw away the key. It works except when it doesn’t.

“Come on, you three,” says Connor’s voice, scratchy over the phone. “This Sally-Anne person’s not the end of the world. Maybe you’ll end up liking her!”
“If I hear that harp one more time, I’m killing myself,” says Roman.
A silence: it goes on so long Shiv thinks the phone’s disconnected. “Romey. Roman, you wouldn’t actually kill yourself, would—“
“Don’t be stupid, Connor, he—uh, he says that every fuckin’ day. ‘I’m killing myself’ is how Roman says hello,” deadpans Kendall. Roman and Shiv snicker; Connor took him seriously? Pathetic. This is why Dad thinks Connor’s weak.
“…Oh,” says Connor. “Okay.” Silence again. “Well…well, guys, speaking as someone who went through this when Dad met your mom, my advice is to just make the best of it.”

Summary
Connor tries to make a fire by rubbing two sticks together, fails over and over. Roman and Kendall sit on a log, watching him. The bruise on Roman’s jaw has faded a bit, but it’s now an unsightly shade of purple-green. Kendall wonders if that’s why their father agreed to this trip in the first place—didn’t want the reminder of what he’d done hanging around all weekend.

Summary
There’d been other incidents, of course. Dumb, really. Kid stuff. These days, moments from his childhood blur with military school. Nights where he couldn’t sleep. Hands larger, more powerful than his. The phase where he’d wet the bed nearly every night for a year. Roman tries not to dwell on the past. No use being such a pussy.
“Eh, I was a fuckin’ freak as a kid,” says Roman, cutting off Shiv’s stammers. He smirks widely—too wide. “It’s not—like, Dad had a point, y’know? Probably I deserved it.”
One night when Roman's home from college, he shares a joint with Shiv and Kendall.

Summary
Of course he can’t be their father figure, he’ll fuck everything up. He does fuck everything up. He’s Connor Roy, the test round, still basically living at home because no one cares about him unless he’s standing in Dad’s shadow. He isn’t their parent, and thank goodness for that, right? Something about trees and their apples.

"And then there's a customized copy of PONY PALS, a gift to you on your 14th birthday from the slippery Mr. Strider. Each page contains lovingly hand-written commentary on the deeds of this intrepid young horse. Later, about halfway through the book, rather than see the gag through to the bitter end, Strider began pasting over entire pages of original text with his own completely rewritten version of the story, while keeping all the chapter titles. His revision is a tough, emotionally draining read. But it's cathartic, in all the worst ways possible.
He tends to get carried away with his projects."Note: this work is an altered book, and it plays on the physical relationship between the original pages and the edited text. As such, it's presented as a series of images. Reading the images is the only way to get the full experience, but I'm aware that some people can't/don't want to read it that way. So if that's the case, you can skip to chapter 13, which is a text-only version of the story, including rough descriptions of the most important illustrations.
