This speaking engagement is meant to be a test of sorts, to see if Spencer and Gideon can get back into the swing of their academic pursuits while still playing nice. They've done a lot of research together over the years and neither one of them wants to see their field of study suffer over something so trivial as interpersonal dysfunction.
Maybe that's the delay—some argument they had to stop to sort out before they could come back to the BAU and put on a neutral face. Maybe Hotch is jumping the gun and he'll hear all about it tonight when he and Spencer get dinner. Maybe he should be bracing himself for Spencer being too upset to go out, or to even want to see him. He hides when he's wounded.
Or maybe his gut is right and something is wrong, terribly wrong.
OR
David Rossi makes a surprise visit to the BAU, tensions between Spencer and Gideon have never been higher, and Hotch and Spencer are still keeping their relationship a secret.

And he’s alone.
He looks around the interior of the wagon, and then examines the outside, too, but there are no answers. Only more questions. Like, why does this wagon have his name on it, where did he get all this food, what had he been doing last?

Spencer lays his palm warm and solid on Aaron’s knee. Bats his lashes up at him and Aaron shivers, fingers clutching the edge of the desk. Spencer laughs. The sound drips with contempt.
“You’re a liar, Hotch,” Spencer says. He rises, swaying close. “Can you even remember the last time you told yourself the truth?”
He’s gone before Aaron can bring himself to admit that he can’t.
