It was necessary to show the world that the Fire Nation Royal Family were altruistic people. Though, no one could've anticipated the extent of the Fire Lord’s charity... well, except maybe Katara.

Summary
Zhao captured Sokka during the events of The Blue Spirit, leading Zuko to rescue him and bring him back to the ship once he realizes the full extent of the other teen's injuries. Having the Water Tribe boy as his prisoner proves to be a lot more of a headache than he expected. But if it gets him the Avatar, this would all be worth it in Zuko's eyes.

While infiltrating the Northern Water Tribe, Zuko overhears a group of Northern waterbenders angered that a woman was awarded the title Master. He follows them in hopes of being led to the Avatar...but what he finds instead is so much worse.
Or, the male waterbenders violently haze Katara over their anger at her bending abilities. She's left broken, with only a sworn enemy to help her.
Hurt/comfort, Katara gets therapy, and eventually a doting boyfriend.
