Everyone is losing hope. Even hardy ol’ Gerson. Alphys deflates at that.
“Besides,” he goes on, “There is still someone left – you yourself Dr Alphys.”
“I’m not –”
“Ye’r the last remnant of the royal axis, young lady,” his eyes glint. Her heart aches for Undyne again. “Them good folks downstairs… They’re gonna look up to you. It’s all up to you now, kid.”
After the human leaves a grieving kingdom behind, Alphys is newly elected Queen. Even as she leads the remainder of monsterkind through these difficult times she has no space to mourn for what she lost.
She doesn’t know that an old friend she had thought dead will return to her.

Her voice broke on the word. The strong visage she had kept up this whole time started to crack and unravel – she was starting to unravel, coming apart at the seams. She looked away as her face crumbled and a tear escaped her.
To his horror, Sans felt something hot stir within him at the sight.
Back in simpler times, before all of this, Sans and Alphys had had a few friendly tumbles in the bed. Now, with most of the kingdom dead and a lot of responsibility dropped on them both, they fall into familiar habits when things fall apart.

They had made it to the surface and that was great. Then again, Sans had thought that a couple times already and it hadn't saved him from waking up with no stars in the end.
