Shameful, conflicted, anything. The Russian doesn’t blink. That’s a yes. “А ты стрелял?” [Have you?] Ogata nudges with the rifle hard enough to force a squint. Completely unnecessary. The corners of his lips twitch back into the facsimile of a grin.

    Barrier troops, that's the name for it. In the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian army formed detachments of snipers to shoot anyone who ran off the battlefield. Sniping their own is something Ogata and Vasya have in common.
