Summary
All Marius Rhodes wanted was to be a starship captain. And he's pretty sure he'll make a damn good one, exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new life... boldly going and all that. But during his time at the Academy he suffers some pretty rough set backs. And the United Federation of Planets that Marius adores so much, has been suddenly thrust into a war that could change the balance of power in the galaxy forever. With the war winding down, Marius finds himself in the center seat far sooner than he imagined. But predators can sense the wounded and while the Federation is still reeling from the horrors of the Dominion War, old enemies set their sites on the Federation while she's still licking her wounds.

Summary
The Jean Valjean has been carrying out its exploratory directive for more than two years with Marius Rhodes in the center seat. Life aboard the Valjean follows the comfortable black and white norms of life aboard a starship, even if her captain's personal life is anything but normal.
Starfleet orders the Valjean to investigate a long lost Starfleet signal, life aboard the ship is upset again.
When a new officer arrives to assist with investigating the source of the transmission, Marius and his crew are forced to exist in the bitter gray areas. Marius must ask the question: can a utopia like the United Federation of Planets exist without a dark protector?

Summary
With the Dominion War more than a year behind them, and the now classified events the 'Jerash Incident' fresh on their minds, the crew of the USS Jean Valjean, led by their young captain, Marius Rhodes, head out into the unknown, living into Zefram Cochran's words.
Scars of battle heal slowly and when new crew members join the Valjean, tensions run high, even as the ship's crew finally settle into the life of multi-year, deep space missions.
