Summary
Finnick forgets his Games almost as soon as they’re won, in a haze of morphling and sleep. He’s barely awake for the first few weeks after the crowning ceremony, wasting away in his new bed in Victor’s Village, where he’s neighbors with monsters and victims alike. His mother is so proud, and Finnick doesn’t understand why, though he remembers he used to, before he’d ever stepped foot in the arena.
One day there’s a package on the doorstep. Finnick’s mother brings it to his bed, where he unwraps three loaves of half-burnt bread, stale and cold from the days-long journey in the mail. There’s a note tucked in between two of them, written in chicken scratch that Finnick can barely read: I’m sorry this happened to you. I hope you’re okay.

Finnick falls in love with the boy with the bread, and the story goes very differently.

“Holy shit! Have you all seen this?!” He yelled out with glee, breaking through the noise of the locker room. Several heads turned to look in his direction. Cameau’s eyes were glued to his phone, and he had an almost manic smile on his face. He continued to swipe down his screen and let out a booming laugh. Hayden caught Shane’s eye and raised his eyebrows in question to gauge whether or not Shane knew what had Cameau so fucking happy. Shane just shrugged and rolled his eyes.
“Are you going to tell us what you’re looking at or just keep laughing like an asshole?” Mitty piped back as he zipped up his bag and threw it over his shoulder. Drapeau walked over to Comeau to glance over his shoulder at this phone, and his eyes almost comically bugged out. He let out a sharp laugh.
“Who would have thought Rozanov was a fucking faggot!” Drapeau exclaimed as he threw his head back.
Shane felt like his heart stopped. The air was suddenly thicker. His vision blurred. He was pretty sure he was about to pass out.
Or, ghosts from Ilya's past make Shane realize he was always going to risk it all for the other man.

“I do not care much for those dolts either,” Simon said.
It stole a laugh out of Anthony, and Simon could only think he wanted to do it, again and again, to see that somber expression on the man’s face shift. There was a man buried beneath the one Simon had come to know, a man who could joke around and smile and act like the weight of the world was not on his shoulders.
Simon had not even realized he had noticed all these things about Anthony Bridgerton.
But it became a habit, staying up late to talk to Anthony, and Simon did not particularly care what that might mean.
