He can’t look at him and see him the way he does others, can’t pull his fake psychic act and pluck the thoughts from Dr. Lecter’s head as easily as opening a book. He knows he’s Lithuanian, an ex-surgeon-current-psychiatrist, can cook, is stronger than he shows himself to be, has some sort of relationship with twitchy little Agent Graham over there (the nature of which he couldn’t even begin to speculate on), and that the only reason Jane knows any of those things in the first place is because Lecter lets him.
