Cale wants to protect his family. He'll do anything to do that. Even if it means destroying himself. Even if it means isolating himself from them.
Even if it means taking the hand of the stranger in the white mask who said that they could avoid death so long as Cale cooperated.
It's easy to lose track of time in the dark. He doesn't remember how long it's been. But he's going to protect them. It doesn't matter what he has to do.
The man in the white mask is letting him protect them. Right? He should be grateful...? He has power now, he's useful. He won't let them die.
AKA Cale is taken by the White Star when he's 10 and molded into something "useful."

Summary
Across the battlefield, Zuko stood, his eyes blank and any spirit he had ever had burned away with the skin around the left side of his face. He stood like he used to when they were children, his stance relaxed and just confident enough to make people hesitate. Despite Azula’s prodigal skills, Zuko had always been better.
Easier, as well, to mold. Azula remembered now, as she saw the scar, why she had left that night. The night Father held down her brother and taught him resilience, and Zuko had sat there and taken it. He hadn’t even screamed.
Azula used to think she was a monster, until she saw Zuko that night.
“Azula?” Katara asked, “What now?”
She glanced at the other girl and then suddenly remembered the firmness of her friends' voices reminding her you’re not a monster.
She wouldn’t kill Zuko today.

There was no way these children would keep him from going home.

Or: After three years of imprisonment, Zuko escapes, just in time to arrive at the climax of the Invasion of Ba Sing Se. From there, he travels with the Avatar's team - first as a political prisoner and then, maybe (and indignantly), as Aang's firebending teacher.
(Zuko wonders why Agni let him suffer in the cold for so many years only to make him the Avatar's mentor. Destiny is a cruel, complicated thing. It takes him a while to figure out his.)
