“Monsieur Leclerc, thank you for giving me the opportunity of showing you around,” Carlos retorts in a singsong voice, his heavily accented French dripping with mirth. He can hear the smile in it, because of course it's Carlos, always game, always playing along with his antics. Carlos, who is stupidly kind and caring. Who is infuriatingly like him, who reads him like a book he has pored over a thousand times, annotated with quirks only he understood.

Carlos didn’t know what he was doing. He was supposed to drift, to spin in front of the crowd, but he went out and kneeled before his car. The car James had doubted. This isn’t the car that would win as per James’ standards, yet he won nonetheless. He won against all odds, against reason, against promise, against all discouragement that could be.
Alternatively: Carlos wins his first WDC in 2027 and retires immediately. Classic Nico Rosberg move. Thing is, he disappeared from the world, and Charles was desperate to find him again.
