'Of course, Damian had known that one day, he would be wed. It was an expectation if he was to lead the League. He had grown up at his grandfather's knee, listening to him regale stories of his beloved wives, with roots that extended until it was impossible to trace their origin; his parents’ love story was a tale fit to stand among legends, a fable spun from the threads of love and tragedy, relayed in the perpetual shadows haunting his mother’s face. In between the lines of unspoken words, he learned that love was a raw adventure; one that would dig its fingers into aching wounds, pry open your ribs and stick to your insides, hollowing out all within until itself was all that remained.
Unconsciously, Damian had expected to follow in their footsteps—to find himself overcome by forces stronger than himself, swept away by the currents of passion and emerge from the other side, like a butterfly breaking from its cocoon, metamorphosed.

Summary
By the time he was fifteen and a half, Meng Yao had decided the following:
He would become a cultivator of renown. He would join his father's sect, and rise within it to the highest rank of his capabilities. And he would discover who had killed his father, and avenge his mother's grief.
Jin Guangshan dies under mysterious circumstances while Meng Yao is still a child and Meng Shi is still in love. Nine years later, Meng Yao strikes out for Jinlintai with his mother's blessing to join Lanling Jin and train as a cultivator - and to find out the truth behind his birth father's conveniently "accidental" death. Along the way, he finds love, monsters, family, and murderers; but Lanling Jin does not give up its secrets easily, and Jin Guangshan's sins are inextricably tied to the reputation of his wealthy, prestigious clan.
Meng Yao will need all his courage and cunning to survive the power struggle brewing at the heart of Jinlintai, as a plague of monsters spreads across the land and the foundations of the secular empire's power tremble. Damian looked down at the blood on his hands with a frown, his face scrunched up in disgust. He looks up and turns towards Nika, spotting a glimpse of her black hair peeking up from the mound of dirt that slowly piled up the more she dug. He sighs and walks over, careful not to wipe his hands clean on instinct. "How much longer is this going to take?" He asks, and by her delayed reply of "A while." He knew it was going to take even longer.
