Summary
Again, Ilya feels the shame flare in his belly. He imagines his father across the counter from them, watching this unfold. Watching Ilya be babied by his fucking boyfriend over an injury. He remembered how he’d yell at his mother for babying Ilya, the word soft being thrown around a lot.
But Ilya likes being babied. He likes watching Shane fuss and frown as he portions out the pills, filling a glass with Ilya’s favorite juice to wash them down with, then bustling up and back down the stairs with Ilya’s favorite pillow and the sleep mask he keeps in his travel bag for planes and hotels.
He is soft. Weak too, probably. His father’s voice spits through his thoughts, sharp and disgusted. Ilya feels them settle on his shoulders, tug at his spine.
“You okay?” Shane asks, hair messy from the shower, Ilya’s pillow against his chest.
His father’s voice fades.
“Yes, moya lyubov. I am okay.”

In consultation with my family and my personal medical team, I've decided to withdraw from the rest of the season to seek treatment for major depressive disorder. I wouldn't be doing right by the rest of my team by playing on a serious physical injury that could affect my ability to contribute to future seasons. The same goes for mental health. Despite the ordeal being pitched as a family affair, Yuna and David were seated ten rows behind him. Shane had a vague recollection of a conversation about their seating arrangements. You’ll be next to a Swedish prince – no, a princess – no, a prince. Jeez, the font on these emails is too small. David, can you hand me my glasses?
As promised, Shane was seated beside a prince. He was obscenely beautiful. His hair reflected a white-gold twinge in the sun, with eyebrows to match, fading into his browbone. A straight nose, rose-bud lips, and skin as smooth as porcelain. A glittering diamond hanging off one earlobe. Objectively beautiful. Regrettably not who he wanted.
Or: What if, post-tuna meltdown, Ilya gets injured and the All-Stars reunion never happens. Shane and Ilya don't make up. Shane actually goes to Wimbledon that year and gets a lot more than he bargained for.
