Summary
How they got together is mostly a run-of-the-mill story. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. A strange and complicated courtship followed. All that really matters to either of them is that they’re happy. They’re in love. They’re miles away from anyone who cares if they are in a relationship or not. And that only matters because no one that knows either of them would ever expect them to be in a relationship in the first place. Perhaps it would be easier if their brothers weren’t best friends. It’s the easiest separation between family and relationship that either of them has ever had.
Which means that it can’t last, of course.

“And why is that?” Kate was not certain why she felt compelled to argue with the man, though he seemed to enjoy the back and forth. As did she, not that she would admit as much.
He tilted his head. “You are attending a ball where the goal of nearly every unmarried person is to find a suitable match. We base such matches on what we think of others actions or status, do we not? To attend such an event disproves your earlier claim.”
“Enlighten me, my lord. Is that your goal? Are you looking for a suitable match?”
He pursed his lips and looked away momentarily, and Kate felt herself almost sway at his movement, as if pulled into his orbit. He took a step closer. “And if I were to say yes?”
“If you were to say yes, then I would suggest it would do you better to peruse the dance floor rather than this terrace.”
