They’re ten, and a group of boys corner Ryland during recess. He takes every insult they throw at him, shoulders hunched and head bowed, until Colt elbows his way between them. Colt, who shouts back with spitting insults and swinging fists. Colt, who ends up in the principal’s office much more after that.

They’re fifteen, and Colt is reminding Ryland that yes, he does need sleep to function, and no, an energy drink does not count as a meal and oh my god what do you mean that’s the only thing you’ve eaten for the past three days?

Or: Ryland comes to watch Colt do his stunts, because who doesn't love watching their brother get thrown into walls and lit on fire? Only, it's Colt's first falling stunt since the accident, and things don't go so well.

Summary
It was Colt’s job to protect Ryland from the insidious whims of others. It was what would make him an Alpha, worthy. He was tough, and resilient. Ryland was soft. That was why Colt threw himself off of buildings and Ryland taught children about the moon.
So yeah, Colt would say he’s fairly progressive, even though Ryland would disagree. It pretty much depended on if punching Tom Ryder unconscious was dark-woke or not.

Eva Stratt has learned to be prepared for virtually everything and expect everything, after being put into her current position.
Learned to adapt to all manner of extenuating circumstances, time and time again, with the goal in mind to find a way to save humanity. Despite all those learned skills, the glass cup hurled at her head when she stuck her head through the door to Dr. Ryland Grace's room blindsided her like nothing else in her life had.

Summary
Since they were children Ryland and Colt had a strange ability to see the other when they were unconscious. Well, more like Ryland saw Colt. No one else has ever been able to see him, and to Colt's defense, it never happened for long. He got knocked out all the time by different stunts, but it was never for a long period of time.
Until Colt's accident.
Until Colt was staring at Ryland in his stupid yellow rain jacket with the dread of knowing that something was very, very wrong.
