Getting shipped off to wherever he was needed was an incidental part of the job, so when he and Ghost were sent to Las Almas, Mexico on what he felt, in hindsight, was one of the most defining moments in his career, he knew he would be faced with nothing but novelty. A new country, new culture and, as he’d later learn, new rules of engagement.
On arrival at the Vaqueros’ base, Alejandro had asked him if he knew Spanish and he’d answered ‘no’ — at least at the time, mildly disoriented from the plane, he’d taken it to mean knowing how to speak it outright.

Rodolfo looked him up and down. Around Alejandro’s frame, the black seemed to inch closer, hugging him in its clench. He rolled his jaw and narrowed his shoulders. The fire painted his skin red.

Burning eyes peered at him: "Why?"

Rudy smiled, all teeth and spite. He reached out for his last glass and raised it above the flames.
