Life had a funny way of working itself out sometimes. The best laid plans and all that.
When he was supposed to be in the prime of his fuck-all, aimless existence, all of his days blending into a monotonous blur of liminality and nothingness, Sterling Cooper found himself instead working as a shop boy in the godforsaken village he'd sworn to himself he'd never return to. He was a complete failure. There were too many memories, too much baggage, too many people who knew him and remembered him and pitied him when he never even wanted their acknowledgment. Too much, too much, too much.
He could see it in the faces of anyone who stopped by Pierre's. The way their eyes skittered over his piercings, pretending not to judge him, the slight widening of recognition in their eyes as they took in his own bright, distinctive shade of blue - the same as that man's - and the forced cheerfulness: "Oh! Sterling Cooper. My, how you've changed…"
And so on and so forth.

Eloise never wanted to be different.

She finds herself thrust into the life she should have been prepared for from birth but was denied. Summary
Ominis Gaunt thinks too much - everyone always tells him, so it must be true. He finds himself constantly thinking in circles, mind whirling around the same familiar themes over and over again until they are as familiar to him as the back of his hand. (that's how the phrase goes, so he has heard.)
Due to this excessive introspection, he knows a few things as fact:
1) He is probably cold-blooded;
2) He does not hate being blind as much as everyone thinks he should; and
3) He hates the new fifth-year even though everyone else loves her.(aka my very self-indulgent Ominis character study mixed with a bit of Pride and Prejudice-esque drama <3)

Fate was a belief long since shirked by Sebastian Sallow. He had renounced it once confronting the reality that it wouldn't save those he loved. Forced to stomach the pain of that realization again, he had run out of patience for the insistence of a conventional cure for his sister’s curse—or lack thereof. Gnashing his teeth against the taste of defeat, he would instead cling to the tenacity that always served him well—even if it led him to thresholds not meant to be crossed. But his focus would splinter upon the entrance of the new fifth year, and a draw not unlike the same fate he rejected would pull them into a dangerous orbit, risking a frightening collision.

Summary
Thorns and Unicorns is about teens being teens, coming from different backgrounds, and facing many difficulties of the Wizarding World systems. Intertwined with Hogwarts Legacy canon story, there’s more depth and realism sprinkled on top.

He asks her one day, eyes bright with a goofy grin stretched wide, if she knows what type of bird is roosted near his window. High school is as as dull and unchallenging as the people within it, and the only thing that would have made it worse would have been actually paying attention in class. So no, she couldn’t identify the bird.
