If you asked poets and minstrels, and lovey-dovey aristocrats wooing naive wenches across Bohemia, they would tell you that absence makes the heart grow fonder. If you asked young lord Hans Capon of Pirkstein, however, he’d tell you it’s an idiotic, pestilential sentiment coined by some daft cunt who never had to suffer the terror and indignity of being parted from their heart’s desire. Or they’ve just never met Henry.
Each time Hans cannot see him, the walls of the world start closing in, threatening to crush him. Each time Henry is away, the young lord has to face the terrifying reality of longing, craving, dreaming, yearning—and the frustration of not knowing whether the blacksmith’s boy is even alive. It’s not like he did much talking during sex considering they were mostly people he barely knew, but the few times they’d said something it had been more along the lines of ‘slut’ and ‘whore’, or ‘cockslut’ here and there as well.
