Summary
Ilya came home from Russia with his father buried and a terrible truth lodged like a piece of glass in his throat. He loves Shane Hollander. He can never have him. Not without making Shane sacrifice something big— too big to give up for the paltry offering of himself in return.
He plays the game with a lump in his stomach, heavy guilt warring with his heart’s anxious flutter every time Shane looks at him. Something fundamental has shifted between them. He’s not sure if it’s been this way since Shane came out to him in Tampa, and held him tight like he was trying to keep Ilya in one piece as he was shattering apart. Or maybe it was that phone call, Ilya shivering on the cold streets of Moscow, a frayed nerve, spilling his guts out on the sidewalk.
Either way, Ilya is going to end it. He has to end it.

AU in which Shane doesn't get a concussion and he and Ilya meet as planned. Ilya, deluded by his own self-loathing, attempts to break up with Shane, for the sake of their careers. But he finds that's easier said than done.

Ok this was so angsty and incredible -What if Ottawa actually fucked up and were a more mild version of Montreal when Shane got there. Think it hits so hard because its honestly entirely possible that they would react this way. They love Ilya and had no idea how awful Montreal was to Shane and so they are going to see a neurodivergent dude show up, not engage, and bring a version of Ilya they could have had if he was out of the closet and be pissed. This one hurts but it should!!!

He conjures his sun’s face: the soft curve of skin where the corner of his eye becomes the sweep of his cheekbone, the stubble that clings to the soft end of his chin, the strong and even line of his eyebrows. “Solnyshko,” Ilya says. “It means sun, yes, but… it’s like a pet name. Sunshine. Honey. I’m calling you my sun.”
This is mortifying in English. Christ, he should never have started this conversation. He should have shaken Shane off when he had the chance. Even as Ilya thinks this, he knows he could not have done it. He cannot deny Shanyshko anything. That has always been the problem between them. What a terrifying, awesome, horrible problem to have. Ilya would like to have this problem for the rest of his life.
