”Enemy”會來來去去，但“nemesis”會是你生命中或多或少永恆不變的部分。這個詞來源於動詞”némein”，意為公正。希臘女神Nemesis是「天譴女神」，也被稱為Adrasteia，意為逃不掉的、不可避免的。文學中的nemesis似乎常出沒於故事主人公身邊。主人公與他們的nemesis常互相糾纏不斷，文學作品中最著名的「主人公-nemesis」組合是夏洛克·福爾摩斯和莫里亞蒂教授。後者在福爾摩斯故事中總是一個反覆出現的威脅，是福爾摩斯永遠無法戰勝的「犯罪界拿破崙」。《恐懼谷》中福爾摩斯向華生描述莫里亞蒂：「但從法律角度，你稱莫里亞蒂為罪犯屬於誹謗——這就是法律的榮光與奧妙！有史以來最偉大的陰謀家，一切邪惡的策劃者，擁有統領地獄的頭腦，或已決定或損毀國家命運——就是那個人！」，可見他對莫里亞蒂的迷戀。
