Shinji never really liked the color red. He used to hate it. It reminded him of Asuka, the desire to crush a neck with his bony fingers to see the capillaries burst. It reminded him of anger, regret, burns and heartbreak, the terror and false hope he felt as Ayanami’s eyes gleamed when he tried to save her.
Now, he’s being confronted by another shade of red he hates: the color of blood, velvet and viscous as wine.

“I was looking forward to last night,” Rozanov says, soft. His pinky finger touches the back of Shane’s hand, just barely, feather light, as if Shane is something fragile.
Something is—off, that has nothing to do with the floaty feeling of the painkillers in his system. Rozanov is looking at him, and his gaze is weighted, pinning him in place. There are bags under his eyes and a slight tilt to the corner of his mouth and his pinky is hooked onto Shane’s and there’s something at the edge of Shane’s consciousness, like chasing a dream, that’s telling him he’s missing something, he’s supposed to remember something—
“I’m sorry,” Shane stammers out. “Did we have plans or something scheduled for last night? I’m having some trouble remembering.”

Shane stiffens. “What about them?”
Ilya is quiet for a beat.
Then, “Nothing.”
“Isn’t that your type?” The words spill out of him, tongue loose from the alcohol earlier. He can feel the heat crawling up his neck again as the seconds tick by without Ilya answering.
Shane turns around, panicked as he scrambles to explain when the silence is practically unbearable. “Not me. I meant, girls. Just the —you’re always surrounded by a certain…type and they always have freckles.”
