Jaemin got drafted fifteenth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs, grinning so wildly that it almost cracked his face in two as the general manager shook his hand, slipping that ugly blue and white jersey over his perfect head. Cameras flashed, the dark blue contrasted terribly with his mess of pink hair, and that had been that. Jaemin was officially out of reach, out of Chenle’s life forever.
Eight thousand kilometers away, Chenle had watched on a tiny phone screen in the privacy of his room, burrowed into one of Jaemin’s old sweatshirts—stolen on one of their late night adventures—and cried.

Or, Chenle is perfectly fine (read: so unbelievably not fine at all) playing college hockey two years after kissing Jaemin on the night that Jaemin left him for the NHL. Of course Jaemin has to come back and throw a sexy ass wrench into all of his life plans (read: again, no plans at all, he’s kind of a mess).

Summary
“It doesn’t have to be that perfect,” video Chenle says, voice more subdued than his usual sunny camera disposition. “Really, none of these date night foods have to be perfect. The care you put into your cooking is what makes the final dish taste good. My boyfriend has better knife skills than me anyway.” He says the last part with a laugh.
There’s a few extra seconds of Chenle explaining the kimchi soup base, but Jaemin can’t help replaying the “my boyfriend has better knife skills than me” part. It’s innocuous, yet it makes his heart skip a beat.
Then, Jaemin exits full screen and gets an eyeful of the caption.

Chenle frowns disapprovingly at the mention of them getting engaged, something the two of them have been debating for the past few months. Rather than starting the same argument, he says “Jaem, your entire family will be there and they all hate me.”
Jaemin rolls his eyes and flops back down. “Like, two of my uncles hate you. The rest of them don’t care.”

“No, actually,” the guy says, shifting something in his other hand, and Chenle looks down to see the long white cane he’s holding, half-hidden under the slung jacket. “I’m afraid not. Did you just… am I…?”
“Yes,” Chenle says, reeling as he puts the pieces together. “You—you can’t see anything?”

Summary
If Jaemin tries hard enough, then he can continue to believe that the whole charade they’re playing isn’t real, that what he and Chenle are engaging in is purely just for show. The double-shot espresso Chenle generously paid for a few hours ago sits cold on the coffee table untouched.
When Jaemin goes to reach for it, his hand trembles. There’s a camera blatantly set up in the corner of the living room; a clear shot of the couch. Jaemin hopes the camera still isn’t rolling. He doesn’t want the editors to review footage of him fiddling with his drink; the grooves of the coffee cup don’t feel right against his fingers. Something like that can’t be recorded. It’s supposed to be a wholesome sight, a moment behind closed doors. Chenle may have been his bandmate first, but now Chenle is his contractually obligated boyfriend.
His hand has stopped shaking, and yet Jaemin can’t get past the first sip of his coffee.

“So?” Chenle stares at him pointedly. His eyes sparkle from the city lights, and Jisung wonders how many stars he could count in them had they been standing outside under the midnight sky instead. “Tell me anyway.”
“Go to an observatory,” Jisung mumbles, “Visit a place where the aurora borealis can be visibly seen. Travel to space.”
In all fairness, there’s things he wants to discover on the planet too, but it’s things he doesn’t know how to say aloud despite how much time he’s spent mulling over the ideals.

Or: The residents at the Neo Tech Medical Center play a game of dog or husband. It goes about as well as one would expect.
