Summary
After watching the Cloud Recesses burn to the ground, Alpha Wei Wuxian realizes that his feelings for the Second Jade of Lan's Alpha, Lan Wangji, are far deeper than he expected. “I’ll… I’ll write to you.” He said with conviction. He met his eyes and shoved his pointed finger in his direction, “Give me your word. Tell me you’ll write back.”
Even as he said this it sounded miserably like the parting of lovers, like a man and wife separated by war where one would die and the other would continue to write and forever wonder why no response was returned. It was not his intention, but before he could amend his request, Lan Wangji was agreeing with equal resolution.
“Wei Ying,” He said, as he turned his back to head toward Gusu.

Wei Ying abandons her suitcase to investigate the sleeping situation, already coming up with a hundred reasons not to inconvenience Lan Zhan by stealing half of her fucking bed, and then gets a better look at it.
It’s huge. Wei Ying has seen a king bed before, and this is bigger than that. Is that a California King? Is that what those huge-ass orgy beds are called? There are parking spaces smaller than this bed. Wei Ying has lived in apartments smaller than this bed.
“You know,” Wei Ying says thoughtfully, “I’ll level with you. I was gonna volunteer to sleep on the couch, or steal some pillows and blankets and sleep in the bathtub, but then I saw this monstrosity. Lan Zhan, look at this fucking bed.”
Lan Zhan rests her hands on the room divider, her face softly amused. “I am looking.”
“We could tend a whole herd of sheep on this bed,” Wei Ying says, warming to her subject. “We could cross the Pacific Ocean and weather any storm on this bed. Fuck, Lan Zhan, I could stage an entire community theatre production of Chicago on this bed.”
Or: There was only one bed, but that part's fine, actually.

Wei Ying collapses to cross-legged with a bounce that shakes the whole couch, barely managing to do it without landing on Lan Zhan’s legs. (She does manage it, though, because she’s a genius.) She pauses long enough to evaluate her options and then flings herself basically into Lan Zhan’s lap, wiggling around and flailing annoyingly and actively taking up as much space as possible. When she’s done she has her head resting on Lan Zhan’s pelvis, arm wrapped around one of Lan Zhan’s thighs where it arcs over her shoulder, and legs draped over the arm of the couch. It’s very warm, and very secure, and extremely comfortable.
It is also easily more intimate than they’ve ever been before (not counting the sock wrestling), which probably breaks at least five Rules (Wei Ying will not be listing which ones), and Wei Ying can feel her heartbeat pounding nervously in her throat.
Or: A normal afternoon, a shared couch, and a surprise game of Ultimate Gay Chicken.

He meets Wei Wuxian, who grabs him by the wrist to drag him to fun places, or to row boats down the lazy summer river, or to shoot kites. He grows closer to Jiang Wanyin and Jiang Yanli, and learns of their charms.Most of all, he learns about Wei Wuxian, who is thoughtful and bright and nothing like anyone else Lan Wangji has ever met before. He has a brilliant mind and a smile that rivals the sun, and Lan Wangji falls in love with him gradually, over bowls of too-spicy soup and lotus seeds.
