Kakeru burns with the truth of that question. Haiji’s head is an exhalation away from resting against Kakeru’s shoulder. Kakeru says, “Yes,” and Haiji smiles a new smile, wide and powerful and tender. He leans closer, his weight on Kakeru’s legs, on Kakeru’s chest when his left hand finds the bony shoulder. Kakeru’s heart might have exploded in his chest, for it feels so big he doesn’t know how he’s still carrying it. Haiji’s so close he breathes him in every time he inhales.
“How much do you care about me, Kakeru?” Haiji whispers against Kakeru’s lips.

Summary
Kakeru knows he’s awkward, poor at social cues (getting better, though), tragically unfunny, has trouble keeping his emotions in check. His teammates all know that about him, too. They accept all those things about him, which is great, and he’s forever thankful.
But who could actually manage to develop a crush on that combination of dysfunction?
He looks at Haiji. Haiji beams back at him, and Kakeru swallows, looking away.

There is no moment of clarity, of incredible foresight illuminated in the crackly three am streetlight that lets him see what they will become – no warning sign, no distress signals. No dramatic lighting, or shocking wide panel focus when the enemy comes into view, like in the thick stacks of manga pilled on his bedside table. There is no lightning. There is no thunder that tells him how I would’ve given you everything becomes I’ll kill you if you touch me.
