El isn't 100% sure how it happened, but suddenly she's sitting in Max's lap and her heart is beating so fast she worries it might fall out of her chest.
They're playing cards with Suzie, Mike and Lucas but no one's really paying attention to the game. El slaps all of her cards into the pile.
"We win!" El says proudly, beaming at Max. Max laughs, and kisses the other girl on the cheek. It feels nice, El thinks.

Hollander took a deep breath. “Okay, listen,” he said. “Just so we’re clear - we don’t know each other outside of playing against each other, right?”
