    Marina is having the best day of her life, and Pearl is trying very hard not to focus on the sensation of the ring pressed into the skin of her chest, held in place by the tightness of her costume and the chain around her neck. The crowd pulses in time with the drums and screams their guts out as Pearl pushes on through her rap beats, and they bring it home like always—and no one knows just how hard Pearl knocked herself into the past.

    All except Marina, who grabs her hand as the stage descends and the smoke clears. They have exactly ten seconds until they’re whisked into a golf cart and rushed to the next stage, and Marina doesn’t waste them. She pulls Pearl close, presses her face into the top of her sweaty head, heaving for breath herself, and mumbles, “I can’t wait to perform with you like that for the rest of my life.”

    And Pearl’s hearts seize and it’s all she can do to stop herself from proposing right there.

    The first thing she felt was the warmth of the sun on her clammy skin, causing her to tense from the temperature difference—since when were the usual domains so cold? Then, the faint aroma of warm pastries, sweet and floral, which relieved her senses after growing so used to the scent of rotting flesh. Oh, how she couldn’t wait to finally go back to the real world and take a proper shower, even if the filth she was covered in now wouldn’t carry over there.

    Hesitantly, amber eyes peeled open, dragging across everything in sight. The wash of honeyed sunlight that cascaded through the stained glass windows patterned like plum blossoms, framed by curtains pulled back; the fine china set about the cream-coloured table, steam still filtering from the tops of delicate teacups full of tea; the heat that flushed her cheeks when she realized who was situated amongst all of it, a fragment of a tender reprieve embedded into the unforgiving code of Herta’s magnum opus:

    Ruan Mei.

    Or, Stelle runs into a familiar face amidst her journey in the Swarm Disaster and tries some pastries along the way, too.
