“Captain,” Spock says carefully. “If you are insinuating something by your argument, it would be best to be direct.”
“Insinuating—!” Jim throws his hands in the air, and Spock very quickly gets the impression that he has made things much, much worse. “I’m not insinuating anything! Look, I mean it when I say it’s none of my business. You can find a nice Vulcan girl or something, I’m sure your dad would like that. Maybe Uhura will find somebody at a starbase, who knows? Certainly not up to me, is it?”
“And you?” Spock says quietly. Curiously, he finds himself dreading the answer.
Jim drains the last of his drink, grimacing as it goes down. He plays with the bottom of the cup against the table, twirling it on its edge. He refuses to meet Spock’s eyes, glaring into the grain of the wood. Finally, he speaks. “I don’t think that concerns you,” he says icily.
Something deep in Spock’s throat expands.

Zhongli rolls the thought in his head over and over again as he grips the steering wheel. It’s been routine—or it was routine. A year gone, thirty days back—another year, another month. He left six months ago for another deployment and now they’re giving him back broken.
Not broken. He shouldn’t be cynical, but it’s kind of hard when the army drops your husband back on you six months into a year with little to no more information than medical.
