It’s locked, of course, and all of the curtains of the cabin have been drawn closed, no lights visible from the outside. After a few moments of silence, the vampire plunges the blade of his machete deep into the wooden door. "I promise I won't hurt you~"

rook shifts in the driver’s seat, contemplating whether he wants to deal with this or not, whether he wants to rise to meet john’s loaded words tonight or leave them to die out like embers in a breeze. it takes him a moment to consider - he could just turn the radio off and finish his patrol like a good, responsible figure of minor authority. but, then again, as the junior deputy, rook has a tendency to get himself into awful, and most often preventable, situations for the good of the county. if john seed is involved, well, that’s just happenstance.

john seed is an absolute mess. cut away the arrogantly shrewd exterior, false confidence smeared so thickly on flesh it flakes off in clumps if you shake hard enough, and you’ll only find more violence, more pain, more wrath. at his core, his heart is nothing more than a heap of jagged edges, a smashed arts & crafts project someone tried to piece back together but gave up halfway - it’s uneven, filled to the brim with broken glass, rusty nails, and gnarly tangles of parasitic worms. it’s ugly, it’s vile, it’s… hurt.
and unfortunately for rook, as he quickly comes to find, hurt is something he’s never been able to walk away from.

it’s all a haze after that, except for joseph’s sweaty face dripping onto his, loose hair falling around them like some kind of privacy curtain.
“you’ll join me at the gates of eden, my lamb. whether it’s this lifetime or the next, god will not let you leave my side.”
