Each year when school would let out, Mike's parents would go on a two week long vacation, bringing Holly with them. This left Nancy and Mike alone at home, and their parents wouldn’t mind them having friends over while they're gone (as long as the house was still in one piece by the time they get back). During those two weeks, Nancy and Mike would invite everyone in the party for a two-week long sleepover. The best part—no parents, which meant they could do whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted.

“I have a what?” Mason exclaims, eyes widening dramatically as he leans forward on the couch.
Will, ever patient, lays a hand on one of the legs he’s currently kneeling between, settled on the living room rug. “A sister,” he repeats. His voice is a stark contrast to Mason’s, all gentle and calm.
“Yeah, I got that part,” Mason says, dangerously toeing the line into condescension. “What does that mean? Did you go out and adopt a kid while I was at school?”

Mason’s biological sister, newly entered into the foster system, comes to live with Mike and Will. Considering Mason’s jealous history with little girls, his transition into brotherhood is not bound to be pretty.

"Now, I know you’ll resist," Mike blurts out, stepping toward him. "But I think this will be good. For both of us! For when we... you know,” Mike trails off, “When we get partners.”
Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.

Or: Mike suggests a spicy card game to help Will loosen up before college. It works a little too well, and suddenly they’re gambling with unresolved feelings, and clothes, that were meant to stay in place.

Having sold their house in Hawkins a year and a half prior and moved to California, when they came back, and the town got put in lockdown, they didn’t have a place to go.
