Samira’s mouth gaped, cheeks flushing red, but still, even she couldn’t hide the small smirk that played at her lips. “Seriously?”
The volume of the music only increased, causing her to shrink back into her seat, her palms shooting up to cover her face.
“Serious as a heart attack.”
A giggle escaped her, and his stomach tightened at the blissful sound. “Oh, so you’re making dad jokes now?”
When she groaned and somehow sank deeper into her seat, he moved his hand to rest carefully on her bare thigh, “Buck up, kid,” he tapped her once, just enough to set her skin aflame. “Still got a long way to go.”

Swallowing a choked sound of grief, Samira held Robby’s intense stare firmly. “Got it,” she spat out roughly, “won’t happen again.”
There could’ve been a flash of regret in his eyes, but she’d already turned on her heels and disappeared to the ambulance bay before she could analyze it.
Her shift was almost over. She could do it, handle another hour with everyone’s eyes on her.
