“Is that all right?” Armand asks, blinking up at him, his pupils enormous.
“Yes…” Daniel breathes out. “Is’good. It’s just…” He’s sure his cheeks are flaring. “I never…”
Armand cups Daniel’s face with his free hand, and Daniel’s mouth falls open on another gasp. He strokes Daniel’s cheek with his thumb, all the way up to his earlobe, rubbing it gently, soothing.
“I know,” he says. “It’s okay. You know, I haven’t done it like this in a long time.”
“Yeah?” Daniel asks, panting.
“Yeah,” Armand replies. “You will be the first I’ve been inside in decades.”

Summary
Daniel sees life like a river. Thinks he is caught up in a current that only goes one way, that will eventually sweep him out to sea. It’s easier for him to think so. It keeps him alive to think so.
He doesn’t know that he could stand up and reach the bottom. He doesn’t know he has a choice.
Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

It’s not like it’s thrusted Daniel into a bottomless pit of despair and psychosis or anything, so who cares? (Nobody, that’s who. Not a damn soul even knows he’s here.)
The smell of stale sweat and hot sugar clings in the air. A stained piece of flannel covers the window but light trickles in through the threadbare fabric, so it must be daytime. He tries to remember if it was daytime last time he looked, but it wouldn’t do anything to give him a sense of how many days he’s been here anyway.

Summary
Over the months between the semesters, Wednesday had plenty of time to sit there and analyse her feelings on everything that happened. But there was a big, gaping hole in the middle of her research, a question that she could not answer by herself. When she trudged down the hallways of Willow Hill, it echoed around every corner, the same ache curling itself around her ribcage as she made her way into his high-security cell. They were finally face to face, but it didn’t feel like it. There were spectators and a security team on standby, and Wednesday was forced to keep up this unconvincing, unfeeling front. She wanted to demand the cameras be turned off and step foot through the iron bars until they were really alone – maybe then she would find the strength to ask.
It was amongst the decaying leaves and soil that Wednesday realised she would never get the chance.
