They stay on the roof until it’s dark, passing a bottle back and forth and sucking up the warm air until it runs cold. They turn through the book like it’s an ancient tome, touch their fingers against scribbled names in pencil until they smudge. Staining their fingers with something almost holy. Matt imagines a sort of sacred ritual: they cut their palms, press them flat to the pages, and then the sky opens up and angels sing their praises to the booking agents of venues all over town. Nirvana the Band will play the Rivoli, and here is the proof, written in blood, right next to Vince Valence’s chickenscratch.

Matt and Jay have the booking book. They celebrate. (Naturally.)

They'd fought before, of course. It was in Matt's nature to make people mad at him. Matt would do something and Owen would get fed up and maybe he'd ignore him for a day or so but he'd always get over it. Matt would say something stupid, an inside joke or an inappropriate comment. Owen would shake his head, maybe call him crazy, or weird, or a freak, but he would call him something and that was enough.

Jay can't dodge this one. Mrs. Johnson is turning seventy-five and she wants her entire family to spend half of December together. They've rented two massive cottages in a fancy winter resort four hours north of Toronto. Maybe, maybe, if he and Matt weren't getting married, he could duck out of it. Maybe if fifty thousand dollars weren't being dangled above their heads, he could whine and mope his way free.

    But Matt wouldn't hear it.

    "You're going," he said.

Fic title from The Leanover by Life Without Buildings

A look through the years at how actual filmmaker Matt Johnson and actual composer Jay McCarrol continually attempt to stuff their ever-evolving relationship back into its platonic confines.

    -
“Hey. Stay still.” Jay said, very matter-of-factly. He rested his head down once more, and actually closed his eyes. There was something serene about it, something that made Matt feel more comfortable somehow. Here, in the closest he’d ever come to sex so far, he was under no obligation to perform. No eyes were on him, no cues were being taken from him, not even the gaze of the guy who had his fucking dick in his hand would rest upon him. Matt knew Jay was too high to have done that intentionally, but part of him wondered whether it was a subconscious choice. If he really did know Matt that well, to know that he wouldn’t be able to let go of himself with an audience.
