Summary
“Josh.” She enunciates carefully, keeping her voice calm and quiet as she slips the gear shifter into park. Annie’s words from this morning echo in her mind: Just tell him how you feel, as if they existed on a plane where that were even possible. Still, if she’s brave she just might be able to get there in a way that doesn’t make her want to bang her skull against a wall, by talking in tighter and tighter circles around it.
“What’s wrong?” Josh asks, already almost vibrating with a concern that’s ready to be churned into action. He cranes back to check on the kids; Maddie huffs out a breath and turns her face further into the car upholstery, but neither of the kids wakes.
“What exactly do you think love is?” The question is directed at him but Donna’s gaze is directed at her hands, still grasping the steering wheel of the rental car at ten and two.
*** a happy ending fix-it follow-up to all i ever wanted (was a life in your shape) aka one of the many possible universes; in which, Donna pulls that car over and tells Josh how she feels and then there's a lot of mutual pining across the midwest ***

Summary
Donna sighs and slumps further into her Adirondack chair, pretending to read her magazine, but keeps stealing glances at Josh. He sticks out like a sore thumb amidst her throng of brothers, who are, to a number, tall and broad and blond, with a wholesome, open-faced Midwestern quality. Even at 5’11”, Josh still looks slight amongst them, dark-headed and wiry, palpably radiating his particular brand of beltway cynicism. He’s been fully integrated into the Moss brood, though, with a train of children trailing in his wake all morning: she’s witnessed him happily tossing her nephews around, hoisting her niece up onto his back, sparring good-naturedly with her brothers about whether a pitch was a strike or a ball. And it’s a good thing, it really is — she’d worried he wouldn’t get along with her family and after a couple of hours they’re all thick as thieves — so why exactly does it feel like she’s been struck in the chest with a pickaxe?
Josh is dating Amy. And yet, here he is, in Wisconsin, winning over Donna's entire family and making her acutely aware of everything she doesn't have.

Summary
She snakes her hand between them, high instead of low, wrapping it around his bowtie. Starts to pull. And it’s this that snaps him out of it.
Because Josh Lyman isn’t a press secretary and he isn’t a communications director and he isn’t Sam or Toby and he sure as hell isn’t Will, but he’s spent enough time around enough writers to appreciate the art of analogy (at the end of the night you wanna be able to pull it open like tony bennett), to recognize symmetry (donna? my tie’s falling apart), to understand that codas don’t exist merely in cello suites or stump speeches; that life makes space for sartorial bookends, too.
Like bowties being tied, then untied.
