Oddly enough, the air felt stifling inside their house, particularly so since his father, Derek, was away on a trip and not present to share the space.
Still caught in the fog of sleep, Eli discerned his Uncle Peter's voice; it was soft, soothing, and carried an undertone of encouragement. He tossed off his blanket and mumbled incoherently, half-heartedly attempting to shake off the drowsiness that clung to him. In the silence that followed, a palpable tension filled the air, making it seem as if time had paused momentarily. However, the hushed voices resumed shortly thereafter, compelling Eli to roll out of bed and shuffle towards his parents' room.

"Just messing with you," she said, her tone light. "I doubt it's anything serious. You’ve barely even settled in!"
Just then, the receptionist’s phone buzzed, cutting through the moment. She picked up, said a few words he couldn’t catch, and then hung up.
“Principal Hale is ready for you,” she said, her tone cheerful. “Just head on in; no need to knock.”
