The place smells faintly of citrus and rain. It’s so painfully nostalgic, but Nice can’t pin it.
“Gege?”
The voice comes small and sure, the way children sound when they aren’t afraid of the world yet.
Nice turns. A boy stands a few feet away, barefoot on the packed dirt. His hair is brown, unevenly cut, one side longer than the other, messy sun caught strands falling over a round, chubby face still a little flushed from running.
He’s missing one of his front teeth, along the bottom. His shirt is too big, sleeves rolled to his elbows, the yellow collar stained with something that might be some kind of juice.
For a second, Nice forgets how to breathe. The boy blinks at him with those wide, brown eyes, familiar in a way that claws at his chest. “Gege, are you okay? You look…” He tilts his head, searching for the word. “Hurt.”

Two years later, Voldemort is resurrected, and suddenly Harry Potter has to deal with a random voice taking up space in his thoughts, and, oh, he’s also gotten re-sorted into Slytherin, because clearly his life was not complicated enough already.Or, how abused traumatised kids really can win with the power of friendship and found family and no one is ever really alone.

Why else would he have so nonchalantly walked off to his death on the same day, the same roof, as Lin Ling had planned to do?
Sometimes Lin Ling wished he could talk to the real Nice, to pick his brain about all this hero stuff, about how to best be him. But if he could have done that, there would have been no need for him to pretend in the first place.
