Glinda the Good; some days, she despises the mask so utterly that she wouldn’t terribly mind if the entire Emerald City were cinders– the role, the name, the loathsome, juvenile wand that makes her feel like a circus sideshow.
Yes, some days, she resents the adoring populace. How eager they were to proclaim her Good, when they crowed over the death of the best woman she’d ever known. Damn them, but they get to move on, while she spends every private moment with the ghosts of might-have-been and should-have-done.
The western sky has been terribly lonely every night these last years.

Summary
Sometimes Glinda imagines that for herself—not quite the beating, maybe. But a lovely faked death, a splotch of blood from an assassin's blade, and a life on the other side of being known. Where would she fit, she wonders? Would she pick flowers with Elphaba, refusing to kneel in the dirt and claiming it was to keep her dress clean, when really her joints had started to ache at the ripe age of fifty-one? Would she scold Fiyero for putting the bowls on the top shelf? Would she come into their bedroom some nights, and would they have missed her there, even though she would never slot between their bodies in that kind of dance?
She can't spend too much time imagining such things, however. It's never real. And her reality needs her with the ferocity of a thousand hungry teeth, always, forever.
