And Shane could cry. His husband, plagued by nightmares of him not eating. His husband, driving the 25 minutes to the hospital in the middle of the night to ensure Shane has food. His husband, who is more than he could ever dream of, let alone ask for. Of course he could cry. He doesn’t though. Instead he pouts his lips and tilts his head upward, in silent question. Ilya is all too happy to place his answering lips on those of his husband. Shane takes the food with quiet thanks, sending Ilya back home to bed with the promise he’ll be back soon. When Shane turns, Shannon's eyes are crinkled in the corner and warmth is radiating off her small smile.
“I’m glad you have him, Shane. What you do is hard and without something like that to keep you going, it can swallow you whole. Don’t take him for granted.”
