Summary
The song fades, and there’s applause as he releases Mipha back to her attendants. He bows as he lets her go, his lips brushing over the back of her knuckles to honor the custom, and as another song begins the room turns to Zelda, who has the privilege of his final dance.
Link’s eyes are on her. There’s nothing in his face, no remorse in his gaze, only the blank acceptance he wore when she told him they were through. The sword that sliced them apart taunts her, its hilt twinkling behind his twitching ear as it no doubt whispers to him in a voice she will never hear. He holds out his hand.
Zelda swallows, feels Impa’s sympathetic eyes on her cheek, and crosses the room to take it.
“Hero of Hyrule,” she greets stiffly, looking him in the eye.
“Princess.” His eyes linger on her mouth before they flick up to meet hers. He lifts her hand in the air and places his other on her waist. His touch burns through his white leather gloves and all seven layers of her clothing. “How are you faring tonight?”

The claiming of the Master Sword rips them apart. A month later, Link is assigned Zelda's appointed knight.

Summary
Zelda said he could ask her anything about his past upon learning how little he remembered. He had asked her only a few questions. What was the point of asking when knowing wouldn’t change anything?
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, the words shooting out of his mouth like air deflating from a balloon. He heard how accusatory his voice was, he knew how unfair the question was, but he couldn’t take back the words, no matter how badly he wanted to. Why would she have told him? When would she have told him? What would she have even said? He frowned in distaste at his own coarseness, a bitterness in his mouth that further upset his appetite.
Zelda opened her mouth to defend herself, eyes damp, but no words came out. It hurt to look at her, so he looked away, blinking hard to try to clear his head.
Her voice came softly, quaking and unsteady. “You didn’t ask.”
