    Summary

Freckles on his shoulders, an old scar just under the collarbone from a wound Henry wasn’t there to defend him from, once. More lost details, more differences, more that persists only in Henry’s mind. Oh, to capture this, to sculpt or carve it. To be able to hold it in his hand with such pressure that it breaks the skin. To absorb it and let it absorb him.

Hans carves Henry a wooden figure of himself. Through blood and killing and stealing and coming home, it becomes the only real thing.

    Summary

His Ma once told him a lie, told often enough, will begin to embody the truth.

Like much of his mother's more superstitious advice, Henry ignored it, and continued living his life as though he were the first boy to ever live.

Like much of his mother's advice, it eventually comes back to haunt him.

Autumn has arrived, and as their time at the Devil's Den draws to a close one of Hans's invented illnesses swiftly becomes a real one.

    Summary

It is the final day of the siege of Suchdol. Judgement Day, some would call it later on. The Praguers' camp had been razed to the ground by reinforcements arriving from Rattay: with Markvart dead, the rest of their forces flee.

Yet, despite being taken back, no victorious hymns echo through the fort. Mortal silence falls upon them: in the heart of the inner courtyard, Sir Hans Capon of Pirkstein kneels, unmoving, on the blood-soaked ground. No words reach him—no hands are strong enough to pull him away. Those who try to approach him cross themselves: the young lord is blind to the world.

It is only Father Godwin’s prayer that breaks through; his palms shaking, spread over Hans’ head: Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificetur nomen tuum; adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua.

Fiat voluntas tua, he repeats, and waits.

Sicut in cælo et in terra, Hans finishes, his voice breaking. He raises his eyes for the briefest moment—as Godwin kneels down to gently pry his hands away.

Henry’s body in his arms is already cold.

    Summary

“What am I supposed to do with you?” Lucanis asks.

Why don’t you try asking Caterina? When Illario tries to speak, only a groan comes out, so he puts the vitriol meant for his voice into the eyes instead, hoping it conveys. Maybe she could be the second Dellamorte who sends another one to death. Won’t we sleep better at night knowing it simply runs in the family?

    “I have a suggestion.”

Illario twitches at the sound of a voice entirely unfamiliar. When he raises his head, he sees the heavy-armoured elf Rook and Lucanis brought along, whose name eludes him. The abundance of blue and grey and the gaudy griffon head on his shield suggest he’s another warden. Rook keeps familiar company.

“I’m conscripting him into the Grey Wardens.”

Instead of being subjected to Lucanis's choice after his attempt at becoming First Talon, Illario is instead conscripted into the Grey Wardens.

    Summary

A lurch in his stomach, like the moment of dark surprise when he misses a step going down the stairs. It soon turns into a gnawing sensation, a memory of hunger that seems to be there always, although Hans has since always had enough to eat. Hunger for touch. For Henry. For their desperate fumbling in his borrowed bed in the fortress. For more time together, despite the busy days that followed them in the Kuttenberg region after the siege, and then returning home to plan this, their great escape, their last chance.

Rattay, Vienna, Sofia, Constantinople, Alexandria, Jerusalem. Hans and Henry on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on borrowed time, through six cities, in six states of sin and sanctity.
