On nights like this, the city breathed in red. Sirens stitched the darkness together, neon puddles trembled under the weight of passing cars, and somewhere below the fire escape, another devil screamed its last.
Aki didn’t hear music—not really—but he heard something in the hum of streetlamps, in the distant subway rumble, in the wind that tugged weakly at his coat. Something steady. Something like a pulse.
Beside him, Angel stood with his hands hanging uselessly at his sides, pale wrists glinting under the city glow. He looked like he always did during patrol: bored, tired, and pretending not to care about the things he very clearly did.
Aki breathed out, slow.
“You ever danced before?” he asked.Aki extended a hand—not close enough to be dangerous, but close enough to invite.
Angel stared at him for a long moment, wings pressed tightly to his back, distrust flickering behind his eyes. People didn’t stand this close to him. People didn’t ask him to dance. People didn’t try.
But Aki didn’t move.
Didn’t waver.Below them, the city kept its rhythm.
