Summary
Malia is trying to be nice, but she’s not good at it. She doesn’t really remember how to be. The Remake got rid of the puncture wounds in her thigh where the bear trap got her, smoothed out her hair until it was no longer matted to her head, scrubbed her skin raw and clean, but it couldn’t fix the way she didn’t feel right in her body anymore. She became something else in there, something wild and terrified. Somewhere in that arena, Malia forgot how to be human. Now she’s just an animal in a girl’s skin. Empathy is a lot to ask for from something like her.
(Malia is the youngest victor in Hunger Games history. Now she has to live with it.)

When the prosecution starts throwing around the word victim in reference to Adrien, he has to stuff his hands under his thighs to keep himself from bolting out of the courtroom.
Adrien had felt unsafe during those last few weeks, but, until he had woken up and seen Father silhouetted in his bedroom doorway, that had only been paranoia. Father was controlling and cold, but he wasn’t hateful. Adrien was isolated. He was often hungry. And some weeks ago, when he had snuck out to visit Nino, sitting thigh-to-thigh on his bed while Adrien cried in that silent, crumbling way of his, he hadn’t argued when Nino put a hand on his shoulder and said, tentatively, That’s abuse.
But Adrien remembers being small and Father touching his hair after he’d aced another test; Father holding his scribbled drawings like they were something precious, and framing them around his office; Father, dressed as Hawkmoth, his eyes wild behind the mask, lashing his sword against Adrien’s baton; Father, collapsed against Mum, crying into her ashy hair.
Adrien finds out Gabriel is Hawkmoth, and Gabriel gets to bring his long-waited plan into action.

It’s heat and pain and blackness ripping through his chest, it’s tears on Jonathan’s face, it’s Nancy pulling the trigger, and they need to move they need to move they need to move and he can’t move and everything is going black and breathing doesn’t exist anymore so with whatever breath his lungs can gather, he yells.
“Run,” he gasps out, more wheeze than word, and he feels warm blood soaking his abdomen. The thing in his chest is holding him up now, his body limp, every nerve screaming as his vision blurs. He can feel its body pulsing inside him.
Nancy’s wide eyes narrow. Steve hears a bang, and he’s dead.
