Summary
It had been his parent's anniversary. Twenty-three years. And he'd told himself it wouldn’t get to him this time.
It did.
So instead, he asks the dumbest, safest thing he can think of.
“What’s for breakfast?” he goes, voice casual; might as well start neutral before they spiral into something heavier.
Kazansky, glances back briefly—enough to check that Mitchell’s upright and alive, probably, or maybe just out of incredulity—then turns to flip something sizzling in the pan, reply exactly what Mitchell was expecting.
“Eggs and bacon.”
Or, Bradshaw and Kerner have the brilliant idea to send Mitchell's sworn rival over to his place during their leave. And on the man's parents' death anniversary, things are bound to go sideways.

Summary
Speaking of friends, I have none quite yet.
I am surrounded by young men of excellent breeding and considerable opinion, who dine with me, walk with me, and argue with great enthusiasm over matters neither of us will remember a fortnight hence. They are clever enough, most of them, and earnest in the way one learns quickly at a place like this, but everything feels performed rather than felt. Each seems to carry himself as though already observed and judged, careful to say the right thing, to admire the right authorities, to become precisely the sort of man Oxford intends to produce.
I find myself liking them well enough in the moment, and mistrusting the liking as soon as we part. Perhaps this is the natural caution of new acquaintance, or perhaps it is only that I am difficult to know; I cannot yet tell. Still, you remain my truest, and dearest friend.
Or, Percival Cunningsworth and his correspondences to one Franklin Bennet during his years at Oxford.

Summary
“You look good,” The half-elf nods at last, but there's a flicker of something softer in his eyes before he turns on his heel, smooths his cuffs, and strolls back toward his bed.
Ashen recovers quickly, clearing his throat and carefully lowering his hands.
“Thank you,” He says, flashing a fanged grin that’s just a little too bright, a little too sharp, “I do try."
Or, the obligatory ballroom scene that comes with every D&D campaign. Ft. lots of self-indulgent pining, whump, and way more character study than I planned.

Summary
I tell myself that this is admiration, nothing more.
That it is natural to notice such things, to be pleased by talent, by intelligence, by a familiar presence made momentarily unfamiliar by light or laughter. I tell myself that I have always been attentive, that this is merely habit dressed up as meaning.
And yet I find my thoughts returning to you without instruction, rehearsing moments that require no rehearsal, lingering where they ought to pass on.
I ask myself when attention becomes attachment, and when attachment becomes something I am no longer permitted to name.
Or, the poet writes a thousand (and a half) words to say i love you without ever actually saying it.

Summary
They dance.
He is not good at it. He is not terrible.
He follows her lead, learns the shape of her joy by the way it tugs him into motion. He feels ridiculous and alive.
He feels, for once, like the weight he carries is not a burden but an anchor—something that keeps him here, now, with her.
Or: Fjord watches Jester dance, and thinks, and thinks, and thinks.

A soothing hand ran up and down his back. Another hand found its way to his hair. It was intimate, but it didn't have to have a label. It was them, and the moment they were sharing.

Summary
He had begged Cas to take the Mark from him. In a moment of weakness, he had begged for a solution, for a bit of angelic power to scrub him clean and save him from a doomed fate, but Cas had only given a sad shake of his head and explained it was out of his power to do anything. When all else had failed, Dean had hoped that Cas might have been enough, and his knees had almost buckled with cold dread when even his angel friend could do nothing.
In a fit of barely concealed hysteria, Dean had suggested cutting out the Mark, sloughing it off his skin, but Cas had hurriedly explained that the Mark was merely a physical aspect of the curse, and cutting it off would do nothing. It would not rid Dean of the images that tormented him, and it would not wash away the feelings of savagery Dean tried so hard to keep under wraps.
That was when the last bit of hope Dean had clung to dissipated and he concluded he was a monster.
