She picks him up by the scruff of his neck. His tiny feet thrash in the air as he tries biting her hand off. No matter. Hurts almost as much as a kitten’s punch.
“Don’t you want a family?” she asks.

“The reason why I keep bringing this up is that I’m trying to offer you a life with me,” Lelouch murmurs. “Like I’ve done countless times, I believe, since we were ten years old. But you’re right, I can’t pretend I know what it’s like to be in your shoes. If you want to go, I’ll stand by you. Maybe I should just make things easier for you. I used to try very hard to make you hate me, during the war, so maybe I’ll do that once again and drive you out of that door myself.”
“Do it, then. For once, please, tell me to leave.”
“I love you, too.”
“You shouldn’t say this,” Suzaku whispers, choked up.
“I love you. I’ve loved you since we were kids. Believe it or not, I loved you during the war, too. I’d like to go on dates with you to parks and town fairs.”
“Stop this.”
“Alright. Is it easier to leave, now?”
Tears stream down Suzaku’s face. Barely seeing, he picks up Hime. “No, it’s not.” It’s a lie, of course. Running away is the easiest thing in the world.
“Yes. But I forgive you. Do you understand, Suzaku? Whatever forgiveness you’re seeking, I’m giving it to you.” She extends her hand, offering the shell he just got for her. “Here it is, my forgiveness. Take it.”
It’s tempting. As the sun rises, it illuminates her face, her resolute expression. Her long, brown hair blows in the ocean breeze.
“It’s not that simple.”
She still won’t retract her hand. “Of course it’s not. My forgiveness won’t save you. Not even my love for you will save you. If your own father now stood in front of you and told you that he forgives you, that still wouldn’t be enough. If all the people in this world told you they forgive you, it still wouldn’t save you. Believe me, I have enough experience on that matter. So what’s the difference between all of this and one seashell? It’s all worth the same. Now, will you take this?”

Summary
Lelouch never expected to survive. Upon waking, the first thing he does is vow to never contact Suzaku or Nunnally or anyone again - no one can know that he's alive. Still, he begins to anonymously send information to Suzaku to help with Zero's work, until CC sneaks in a note with Lelouch's phone number and suddenly, Suzaku can contact him back.
And despite knowing it won't lead anywhere good, how could Lelouch possibly bring himself to not respond?
