Summary
Buck stared back up at the stars.
“I’m sorry, Eds,” he whispered.
His voice sounded small in the quiet of the desert.
Buck swallowed.
He imagined Eddie’s face the way it had looked that morning at the airport. Half worried, half pretending to be happy for Buck. Buck squeezed his eyes shut for a second.
“I just got you, Eds. And now I’m leaving you again. I’m so sorry.”
At some point, Buck stopped shivering. The exhaustion was pulling at him, trying to drag him under. But he felt strangely calm.
“I wish you were here,” Buck whispered to the sky.
He imagined Eddie sitting beside him, holding him close.
Buck’s breathing slowed. His eyes felt heavy.
“I love you, Eddie,” Buck murmured quietly.

Summary
“But you’re supposed to-”
Eddie cut himself off, running a hand through his hair as he tried to ground himself a little, unsuccessfully.
“You’re supposed to think. You always do this! Throw yourself into dangerous situations without a fucking care in the world.” Eddie’s voice was a lot louder now.
Buck stood up, his ribs ached and the stitches pulled a little, but he ignored it, way too pent up in his emotions.
“That’s not fair.” Buck said, facing Eddie.
“It’s not?” Eddie scoffed sarcastically. He took a step closer to Buck, now inches away from his best friend. “It’s completely fair.”
“Why?”
“Because I-” Eddie had to stop himself again.
Buck stared at him, his heart pounding in his chest from the tension. He wasn’t quite sure what kind of tension it was, but the air was definitely tense. “Why Eddie,” Buck’s voice rose.
“Because I fucking love you!” Eddie nearly shouted.

Summary
“Why are you hurting me if you want me to love you?” Buck asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"Because you weren’t seeing clearly, were you Evan?” He sounded so genuine. The exhaustion that was taking over Buck’s mind was almost believing every word he said.
“Are you seeing a little more clearly now, Evan?” Buck almost said yes, and maybe that would’ve been the better response, but he could only think about the person he needed right now.
“You’ll never be him.” Buck said. “You’ll never be Eddie.”
