“Holy shit,” Barrett yelps. “The Metros plane went down.”
The room comes to a stop, the buzzing energy of a win quieting, but Ilya barely hears him, still too caught up on Shane messaging him through Instagram. They have barely talked since their fight. What could he have to say on Instagram of all places?
… What did Barrett say?
Ilya blinks.
A plane went down. The Metros plane?
That cannot be true. Ilya must have heard wrong.
_____Instead of Ilya’s plane going down after their Boxing Day fight, it’s Shane’s. Ilya breaks down in the locker room, assuming the worst. When he finds out Shane is alive, his next assumption is that Shane will be mad at him for outing their relationship to the Centaurs. The team helps him get to Shane though, and all of his fears are put to rest.

“Please. Please, please.”
He’s begging now. Begging Ilya to take him back. To forget everything that happened in Tampa. It would be hard, but he would do it. He would do anything to keep Ilya.
“I’ll do anything,” he tells him. “I’ll do anything you want, just please don’t… Please don’t do this. I mean it - I can pretend I don’t feel anything. Please, just… just take me back. Let me come back to you, I’ll be so good for you. Please. ”
Ilya doesn’t answer. He’s so quiet on the other end of the phone, that Shane has to check his screen if the call is still going. It is.
“Ilya?” he whispers.
“Shane,” Ilya whispers back. “Please hang up the phone.”- or, shane's accident never happens and ilya follows through with his promise to break things off with shane, only to regret it immediately, especially when shane calls him drunk and upset

“I just want to feel your forehead, okay?” Ilya spoke softly, like Shane was a fawn easily spooked.
He shook his head frantically, then brought his hands up to fist his hair when the motion exacerbated the throbbing. “N-no,” he breathed, “not sick. no point.” His sense of control was really fraying now, and Ilya could sense it.
“Moya lyubov, you act like skittish cat. Is no big deal then. If you are not sick, then there is nothing to hide, yes?”
Maybe it was the way he spoke to him so tenderly, or the throbbing in his head and the aching in his bones, but the next time Ilya reached for him, he didn't pull away.
When the strong, calloused hand found his forehead and Ilya inhaled sharply, Shane held his breath for what he knew came next.
“Jesus, you are burning!” his boyfriend cried, prompting Shane to once again shrink away.
“Nuh-uh,” he grumbled. “Don't get sick, remember?”
