    Summary

The night before they travel to Dorset to spend Christmas with Sherlock's parents and John's wife, 221 Baker Street is peaceful with the smell of baking, flickering candles and presents under the tree. But Father Christmas can't be relied upon to bring the boys their heart's desires. Just as well Mrs Hudson - who is NOT a fairy godmother OR their housekeeper, thank you very much - is so good at her job.

I love the sweetness of this story. It makes so much more sense than the canon does: John wouldn't be able to forgive Mary for coming so close to killing Sherlock, and both John and Sherlock would have become aware of how much they loved each other during Sherlock's recovery. Most of all, Mrs. Hudson would be able to sort them out and bind them together with their own heartstrings. She's much more than a housekeeper.

This is a wonderful story about how Sherlock Holmes learned about love when he became a parent accidentally, and how John Watson, who had gone walkabout to deal with all the pain and fury he was carrying, returned and was able to become Sherlock's love and lover and the father of his boy. Very charming and, oddly, believable.

    Summary

Before his third year of Hogwarts has even begun, Harry faces three whole weeks of unsupervised time in Diagon Alley. In that time he takes a trip to Gringotts - and that changes everything.

Burdened with the knowledge that Dumbledore has been blocking his family magic, and manipulating far more than he ever thought possible, Harry doesn't know who he can trust; but he knows he can't keep going that way. There's a whole world of lore and politics and history to catch up on, and the more he learns, the more Harry realises his true place in the world, and how much is being kept hidden from him. All the while, Dumbledore's twinkling eyes are constantly watching, and Harry can't let on how much he knows.

With help from unexpected places, Harry starts on a journey to end the war, and reshape the wizarding world. With how much he looks like James Potter, people have forgotten one important thing about him - he is Lily Evans' son, and she was one hell of a witch.

The longest fic I've ever read. It will take a big chunk of your time. But it's compelling, satisfying, and hard to put down. The author has addressed many of the problems of the original story, giving us explanations of behavior that made no sense and giving us fix-its that allow us to see many characters who died end up happy. S/he also gives us gay and lesbian characters, an asexual student, bisexuals, and trans people. Magic creates an inclusive and accepting community after the war.

I loved the author's characterizations of Harry, Neville, Draco Malfoy, Susan Bones, Hannah Abbot, the Weasley twins, Bill and Fleur, Ginny, Charlie, Sirius, Remus, Snape, Tonks, and Kingsley. Which is not to say that other characters are not very well done. Dumbledore, Ron, and Hermione do not come out well in this story, but they are consistently portrayed.

Harry in particular is allowed to be extremely powerful and able to raise a well-trained fighting force. He learns and teaches superior fighting skills. He is a cooperative leader of students from all houses. He's smart and kind to all sorts of magical folk. Most of all, he has a backbone. He doesn't forgive or forget those who have done him great wrong. He is not a saint, and he makes mistakes, but he is a good man.

I heartily recommend this story to anyone willing to put in the time. It is an adult version of the story, revised to give us an AU that is more realistic but just as imaginative as the original.

Here's the series for Performance in a Leading Role. I enjoy these stories and like how they extend the original work.
