Cloud Strife was never destined for greatness. Figure skating was meant to be a fun childhood hobby, an excuse to see more of the world, not an obsession. But after a chance encounter with Sephiroth at the Junior World Championships left him reeling, the only solace Cloud could find was in chasing his former hero's shadow.
One day he would beat him. He would take everything from him. And when he did, he would look down at Sephiroth from the top of that podium and etch his moment of defeat into his memory forever.
Neither would back down. Their thirst for victory would create a rivalry for the ages.

After years of waiting, Sephiroth finds his soulmate during a botched mission to Nibelheim. Cloud is not the supportive, obedient soulmate Sephiroth had been expecting, but he doesn't have time to worry about it as they run from Shinra and look for answers.
Where Sephiroth is a bad at relationships, but is also traumatized after Jenova/Hojo/Shinra/soulmate expectations, Cloud is stressed out fluff trying to do his best fixing the past, and Zack keeps everyone alive.

Then there were glimpses—of golden strands tipped in smolders, of angry red veins on an even redder clawed-tipped arm, of regal details stitched elegantly upon the leather of an armored coat—disappearing in the voided darkness just as quick as they appeared in the corners of her vision. A twirl of her scythe to land her attack and she could almost see the monstrous claws in the seconds everything spun and blurred, the hand possessively wrapped around her very own, both holding on her reaper weapon. Akin to someone close behind her, enveloping her, guiding her. Tutor and student. Hunter and prey.

After the world is saved, Rook settles back into life in Dock Town. It's a good life, really. There's just one weird thing. She keeps seeing Crows following her around the city. Apparently, the new First Talon has put out a contract on her. Rook is mostly offended he's not bothering to do the job himself.
