It’s so stupid. Maybe Shane will think he’s fucking creepy. “Sorry, I was—”
“Okay,” Shane says, simply, the tiniest smile blossoming on his face. “It would be almost like being home.”
He says home not as in Montreal or the cottage. He says home as in Ilya. Ilya smiles.
Ilya is very unlucky on Valentine's Day, until he isn’t.
From ’16 to ‘22, five Valentine’s days that do not work out for Ilya, and where and with whom he spends them; and one that it does.

or, Ilya's father doesn't die in 2017; Ilya breaks up with Shane instead of confessing his love. They get older, but not any less stupid about each other. Shane gets a boyfriend; Ilya gets on medication; they work on becoming whole people. And they always find their way back to each other.

Ilya knows it’s a bad idea. Of course it is. But everything he’s ever done in regards to Shane Hollander has been a bad idea.
So he sends the text, even though they’re playing against each other in just a few hours. Even though it’s reckless, and it’s breaking all their rules. Even though he’s supposed to be rebuilding the distance that Tampa tore down, instead of letting it shrink even further.
But he just can’t seem to help himself.
